The book and the app

I decided to write this book alongside its readers. The chapters go up on Substack as they’re written, so I can hear what is clear and what is useful before it’s published. The practice app is in the stores. Both free.

Existential Safety

The chapters are being published on Substack, among other writings, so I can hear from readers what is unclear and what is useful before the book is finished. Read on your phone or in your inbox, and say what you think in the comments, or write me an email. I’m always glad to hear from readers.

The Deeply Safe App

In Pali and Sanskrit, citta is one word for heart and mind. A 2025 EEG study of experienced Vipassana meditators found that the deeper they went, the more clearly the brain registered each heartbeat. This app puts that signal in your ears, live, through a chest strap.

Needs a chest strap, Polar H10 or similar. Why not a watch?

A strap reads every beat as it happens. Watches and the phone camera give an average, a few seconds late, too slow to listen to.

How the book is organised

Two halves. The first explains the wound. The second is the practice that heals it.

First half · Theory

Existential Attachment Safety Theory

Where existential attachment comes from, how the core wound forms before memory, and how the endless seeker, the illusory existential self, grows on top of it. Why the wisdom traditions have always worked with exactly this, and why the sudden and the gradual paths suit different people.

Second half · Training

Existential Affective Safety Training

The practice: the SEER path of settling, exposure, extinction and release. Each practice is built on the theory, so you know what it is doing and why. When the mechanism is visible, enlightenment stops being a mystery and becomes something within reach.
